A consortium of Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems Europe GmbH (MHPSE), Budimex S.A. and Técnicas Reunidas, SA, is building a high-efficiency brown coal-fired power unit at the mining and energy complex in Turów (Poland). The power capacity of the brown coal power unit will be slightly below 500 MW gross, with the efficiency of over 43%. This parameter will make the new unit one of the most modern units in Europe.
The subject of the contract is the construction of a separate Power Unit offering a net electric power of 450 MWe and operating on supercritical steam parameters.
The basic fuel for the Power Unit is lignite.
Auxiliary fuel used for starting purposes is light fuel oil.
The basic generation units of the Power Unit are:
- The lignite-fired, monotube, single-pass, tower-type boiler with a pulverized-fuel fired furnace and a low-emission combustion chamber, the condensing, single-shaft turbine designed to work together with the boiler and coupled with the electricity generator connected, via a transformer, to the 400 kV HV network. The Power Unit equipment comprises all the processing systems necessary for its operation, including:
- Steam generation system (boiler) together with exhaust gas treatment systems (denitrogenation, wet flue gas desulphurisation, dedusting), Heat energy generation system (boiler) together with exhaust gas extraction and treatment systems (denitrogenation, dedusting, wet flue gas desulphurisation), the turbine set and all associated systems including the generator, water and steam circuits, cooling water systems, water supply and sewage disposal systems (sewage treatment plant), systems for removing solid waste from the combustion process (deslagging, ash removal and management of the product from IOS – gypsum), electrical system with power output to the national grid, power unit control systems
The scope of the contract includes the preparation of the Construction Site, design, construction, supply of equipment, assembly, commissioning and test run of the new Power Unit, including the delivery of the Supercritical Boiler, steam turbine, generator, desulfurization, de-dusting and denitrogenation systems, and the commissioning of the power unit together with installations and associated facilities.
The new power unit is part of the ambitious investment project of the PGE capital group with a total value of approx. PLN 50 billion. As a result, the impact on the natural environment will be significantly reduced due to a significant reduction of emissions of carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, dust and mercury.
The project worth PLN 3,530,000,000 is carried out by the consortium of the following companies: Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems Europe GmbH, BUDIMEX S.A. and Tecnicas Reunidas S.A.
Electricity generated by the Turów power plant covers approximately 8% of the Poland’s demand for electricity. It is worth noting that during the implementation of the project, the provisions of the agreement were adapted to the needs of the latest BAT-related conclusions (which entered into force in the EU in 2017) referring to more restrictive emission limits for, among others: sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides and solids suspended in gas.
*Net project value: PLN 3,530,000,000 including the amount of PLN 1,592,000,000 attributable to Budimex S.A., Tecnicas Reunidas S.A. – Turów S.C.
